After hearing pretty much everyone talk about this show how the infamous Jack Bauer shoots his way to an end result and never actually takes a bathroom break I am well and truly HOOKED! Series 1 I can only imagine is the tip of the iceberg and I am settling down this morning to maybe finish the series. Last night or should I say this morning I was up until the wee hours watching. Captivated by the addictive story I continue to watch as Jack races to find his daughter save the president to be and find the bad guy.

REVIEW: A Game of Thrones – Book One

The back of the book says:

‘Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men… all will play the Game of Thrones.

My Thoughts:

An emotive literary masterpiece in the fantasy sector of books.

Although this book was a slow burner it is also thoroughly engaging and triggers the reading senses with the feeling of having to know what happens next. Many a day and night were spent with minimal sleep with that want burning away. This book is very much an introduction to the series and gives you a feel for the good, the bad and the ugly so to speak. A tale of love, heartbreak and strong friendship family and otherwise.

Not an avid fantasy reader it originally felt like an uphill struggle and not yet converted but deep into the action I enjoyed this book immensely. I have started the next stage of the many books in this epic saga but once again am struggling.

Originally I promised myself that I would read all of the books before I even glanced at the TV series however after one episode I was hooked and the rest is history. The TV series links incredibly well to the books and follows through very well. If I am honest I am not surprise as HBO does not hold back on reality and whilst working with the writer of the book it is only expected that the plot would almost the same as the book.

Martin’s descriptive technique throughout is not only thrilling but wonderfully thoughtful. Working with the reader’s imagination the world is created and the scene set for the longest game of their lives. As Cersei Lannister says: When you play the game of thrones you win or you die. No truer word is said.
